Every tapestry we create is not just a pretty picture, it is much more… Because you send us your own photograph or art, the image means a lot to you. Tapestry of the Month was started so that we could share the stories behind the images. Here is our current Tapestry of the Month story.

In Memory of Ian (Nadine's Story)

Twenty four years ago I gave birth to a wonderful little boy named Ian. Ian was a bright, funny, loving young man. He loved and was loved by everyone.

Ian met a wonderful young woman named Kasey about a year ago. They had an immediate bond and were together almost immediately. Kasey became pregnant and they planned on being married at the end of June.

Ian died in mid June this year, one week before his 24th birthday. Ian had battled a disease for the past few years of his life and he finally lost the fight. Ian and Kasey only got to spend a few short happy months together and Ian's soon to be daughter, Kamryn, will never get to meet her father.

I am planning on going to visit Kasey shortly after Kamryn's birth. I wanted to take a gift with me that would memorialize Ian and one that Kasey would get some comfort from. I searched the internet for days and I found lots of sites that offered personalized" gifts, but none felt to me like they had any emotional connection to them. I eventually happened upon ontapestry.com and I knew immediately that this was something special. To be able to take a picture and create a life size blanket with Ian and Kasey on it was perfect. It held the memory of the day they were together and it was something Kasey and Kamryn could both put there hands on and roll up in.

I was very excited about this happening and I sent a picture I had on the computer that my son had emailed to me to ontapestry.com. I received a standard reply back that the photo I had was not of adequate size or quality to be used and could I please send them a larger and/or hard copy photo. Well, I had no such "photo", only the emailed copy.  When I told this to ontapestry.com I received an email from Galina explaining how it would be very difficult to do and they did not like to try since they care about the quality of their product. I told her I understood and wished I had one to send, but the fact was that my son had died and there were no "real" pictures available.

I thought that was the end of it and I was very disappointed. However, Galina wrote back and said how truly sorry she was about Ian and that she would somehow make the blanket happen for me. I was delighted that a stranger, much less a business, would take a personal interest and do something they did not have to do to help me.

I did end up being able to get a printed copy of a picture to her to help, but she took what little we had to give her to work with and created the blanket.

I was overwhelmed when I received the blanket. It is incredible. The quality and imagery is truly marvelous. To see a life size image of Kasey and Ian together on a happy day of their life was a feeling I cannot put into words. Everyone, including myself, has cried when they see the blanket. I cannot wait to get it to Kasey. I can only imagine how hard it is for a young woman to lose her love and the father of her child at such a young age. I hope this blanket will give her some comfort.

I want to thank Galina, and ontapestry.com, so much for taking the time and trouble to help me. In a cold and sometimes heartless world it is nice to know that there are people like Galina in it. It warms my saddened heart.

Happy Cotton Anniversary! (Crystal’s Story)

Since this is our second anniversary, I decided to come up with a way to follow the traditional gift suggestion, which for the second year is cotton. I decided to design a tapestry based on our marriage. We were married at Multnomah Falls Lodge in Oregon, so that is the waterfall featured in the center of the design. The leonidas roses were the roses in our wedding and the dragonfly was part of the theme. We discovered that dragonflies are a symbol of marriage as well as dreams, change and hope.  I then looked for a motto about waterfalls that I thought suited us and found the following: "a strong person and a waterfall channel their own path" which I had translated into latin. The last bit of work I did in creating our design was to research family crests. I learned that a crest does not have to be handed down through the family, but that they were made for a specific person who often chose to pass it down through the years. Thus, I redesigned our family crest, by combining the Thompson crest with the Chesney crest and adding a few other heraldic elements that describe us.  My final step was to find a place to turn my design from dream to a reality. I was not even sure if I would get it in time for our anniversary, as I had taken so long on my end designing it. Galina, at On Tapestry.com was very helpful in answering all of my questions while I was preparing the artwork to be transferred to tapestry. When the tapestry arrived a week before I needed it I was thrilled. It is absolutely beautiful work and I am sure my husband will love it.  Thanks again!
